Smittybilt HD Pivot Tire Carrier for 2021-2026 Ford Bronco - Recon Recovery
Let me start by saying that this is the most robust tire carrier that I’ve seen on the market. It doesn’t just attach to the factory hinge mounts. It replaces the factory mounts for the hinge. And it’s insanely strong and heavy duty. It is probably a little more difficult to install than others. But now that I have it installed, I’m very happy with the product. The upper mount for the hinge on top is very difficult to get to and the instructions do not tell you that the tailgate has to come off, but it does have to come off to slide that hinge mount into place. Thankfully, I was able to remove the tailgate and set it in the back of the bronco while I installed the tire carrier amount which does take two people because it’s so heavy. Honestly, I believe the tire carrier is heavier than the actual tailgate. The tailgate is super light. I also highly recommend getting metric ratchet wrenches. They will be very helpful on the top hinge mount and the Tail light because it is hidden behind the rear quarter panel that wraps around over the top of the tail light. So it’s very difficult to get to those bolts and and the tail light bolts in the tailgate door jam. You can only move an eighth of an inch or a quarter of an inch with the wrench every time you turn the bolt. So a ratchet style wrench would’ve been a huge help. If you can find them with the pivot head on them, that would be even better. I could’ve went and bought one, but it was 10 o’clock at night when I installed it so I just finished it up with what I had.
I really wasn’t sure how I was gonna leave this review because of the time of the install. I was so frustrated because it was very difficult to do some of the work because I didn’t have the right tool needed. Again, the ratchet style wrench would’ve been a huge help. But now that it’s installed and I have my spare tire on it. It is amazing. Before with the factory tire carrier, I had a clanking noise sounded like metal to metal in the tailgate area. Every time you hit a hard bump. That is completely gone. I’ve purposely been jumping railroad tracks and everything that I could today to try to make this thing, make some kind of a noise and it will not do it. They say that it will hold an extra 135 pounds on top of the factory 130 pound capability. And I do believe that. I am only running a 35 x 13.50R22 on mine but it is a little bit heavier than the factory 35 inch that came on the Sasquatch package. It weighs in at 108 pounds with the 22 x 10 wheel. But this tire carrier definitely made a huge difference in a highly recommend it.
You can feel the strength in this product. Monoblock aluminum and chromoly brackets make it durable!
The single-action operation is smooth. Opening and closing the tailgate with a big tire is no longer a struggle.
Works exactly as expected. The carrier doesn’t make any noise, and my tire is secure.
